‘Significant delays,’ lane closures expected on major Columbia road

Drivers on a major Columbia-area road show expect “significant delays” and lane closures in the coming days.

Clemson Road is being paved between Old Clemson Road and Chimneyridge Drive between Wednesday and Thursday of this week, Richland County announced in a news release.

Officials expect roadwork to close some lanes and create delays for commuters, who are encouraged to find alternate routes. Work should end for the day by 5 p.m. both days, the release says.

The work is part of an expansion of Clemson Road funded by the county’s penny tax road program. The project, which the county estimates is about 50% complete, will expand the road from two lanes to five, and add bicycle lanes to the sides between Old Clemson and Chimneyridge. Widening will take place between Old Clemson Road and Sparkleberry Crossing.

The project is expected to be completed by early 2021.
