Coroner identifies SC teen killed in 4-vehicle crash Thursday
An 18-year-old from Sumter died Feb. 27 after a four-vehicle collision, according to Sumter County Coroner Robert Baker.
Juyheim Robinson Jay of Old Manning Road in Sumter was pronounced dead at the scene on Thursday afternoon, officials said.
Around 4:20 p.m., Jay was driving westbound on Clipper Road near U.S. 15 in a Nissan sedan with three other passengers. The teenager crossed the center line on a curve in the road and sideswiped a Chevrolet pickup truck, according to South Carolina Highway Patrol.
Jay’s vehicle then crossed entirely into eastbound lane, colliding with a Toyota Camry and causing the Camry to hit a Jeep SUV. The drivers of the three other vehicles involved in the collision wore seatbelts and were uninjured, according to Lance Cpl. Matt Southern of the highway patrol.
Jay was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, Southern said in an incident report. The three other occupants of Jay’s vehicle also were not wearing seatbelts and were taken by EMS to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, Southern said.
An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on Jay at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston on Monday, Coroner Baker said in a news release. South Carolina Highway Patrol is still investigating the incident.
