‘Head West’: West Columbia reveals new logo. What do you think?
West Columbia has a new digital face. It is blue and green and encourages everyone to “head west.”
The city unveiled its new logo this week with a quiet change to its Facebook profile picture and an update to its website and social media pages.
“West Columbia has deep roots, and the city continues to grow. It’s a place where people like to live, work, play and entertain. It’s a city that continues to be an affordable option to raise a family and run a business. And that’s why we needed a new brand to reflect our business-friendly nature and our culturally creative growth,” the city said in a statement.
The “head west” graphic replaced the city’s former logo, which featured an illustrated green-and-white building and bridge. “Head West” emphasizes “excitement, community and a way of doing things that’s all our own,” according to the city.
A large, deep green “West” sits atop “Columbia” in blue and below that, “Head West.” To the right side of the graphic is a circle with blue-green gradient, a stylized, tilted “W” (which could look like a bridge or a skyline, too) and a compass rose pointing due west.
The graphic keeps the same green tone as the retired city logo, but blends in blue to represent the river, which the city considers one of its best assets, spokesperson Anna Huffman said.
“Throughout American history, opportunity has been in the west — and it still is,” Mayor Tem Miles said. “As a city, we are full of opportunity and we are inviting everyone to ‘Head West’ and join us.”
West Columbia staff and public relations firm Chernoff Newman designed the new logo, Huffman said. The project began about a year ago, and the final logo was approved by the new city council, Huffman said.
Council member David Moye said he also sees the design as a nod to the new administration in city government, and how it is planning for the future.
“Our new city council is young, they’re professional, and we wanted the new logo to reflect our generation of forward-thinking leadership,” he said.
West Columbia will gradually replace business cards and other materials as needed to feature the new logo, according to Huffman.
