Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin gets a new job

Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin has a new job.

Benjamin, an attorney, has joined the Charleston Group, a Fayetteville, N.C.-based law firm. The Charleston Group announced the move in a news release on Tuesday.

In his new position, Benjamin will co-chair the firm’s public finance and affordable housing practices. Charleston Group cited his experience with bonds and other revenue-based obligations used by local governments.

“Mayor Benjamin has earned a national reputation,” said Jonathan Charleston, the firm’s managing principal in a statement. “He brings a depth of experience in public finance and other practice areas including transaction, real estate, government relations, and regulatory matters. “We are honored to have Mayor Benjamin, and his track record for delivering results, as a member of our firm.”

In addition to serving as Columbia’s mayor since 2010, Benjamin has also served as president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors and recently served as a co-chair of former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg’s presidential campaign.

“I am constantly working to find the best way to deliver for my clients — just as I do for my constituents,” Benjamin said in a Charleston Group statement. “Combining my experience and network with the talent, resources, and reach of the Charleston Group creates an unmatched value proposition for navigating the challenges of public finance.”
