The S.C. Philharmonic is not going to let the coronavirus stop it from performing. Not even if it means it won’t have an audience.

As other events throughout the Midlands have been canceled because of the virus, the Philharmonic announced Thursday it will go forward with its planned concert on Saturday at the Koger Center for the Arts — without an audience in attendance.

Instead, the performance will be livestreamed on the Philharmonic’s website starting at 7:30 p.m., the orchestra announced on Thursday. The performance will be broadcast at a later date on South Carolina Public Radio.

“The South Carolina Philharmonic is committed to the health and safety of our audience and musicians at our concerts,” the Philharmonic said in a statement. “Based on the rapidly changing public health situation, the cancellation/postponement of local events, and in line with the concerns of our patrons and staff, we have decided to close our upcoming Masterworks concert, Phenoms & Schumann, to the public.”

Anyone with questions about previously purchased tickets for the show can contact tickets@scphilharmonic.com or call 803-771-7937.

But, the orchestra asks that concertgoers donate their tickets to the cost of producing its “alternative concert broadcast.”

Updates will be posted to the Philharmonic’s website.
