26-year-old killed in late-night highway crash, Lexington County Coroner says

A Midlands man was killed late Saturday night after crashing into trees, the Lexington County Coroner’s Office said.

The collision happened just before 10:30 p.m. on Interstate 20, Coroner Margaret Fisher said Sunday in a new release.

Marco Antonio Miranda-Giron was heading west on I-20 when his vehicle ran off the right side of the highway at mile marker 38, according to the release.

The 26-year-old Gilbert resident’s vehicle smashed into several trees before flipping over, the coroner’s office reported.

Miranda-Giron died at the scene of what Fisher called an accident.

He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the release.

No other injuries have been reported.

Information on what caused Miranda-Giron to lose control of the vehicle was not available, but the wreck is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

As of Sunday, 164 people have died on South Carolina roads in 2020, according to the Department of Public Safety. Of those deaths, 117 of the victims had access to seat belts, and 61 were not wearing safety restraints, DPS said.
