High school student drowns while swimming with friends at Midlands lake, coroner says
A teenager died Tuesday after drowning while swimming with friends in a Midlands lake, the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office said.
Armando Cervantes Estrada was one of several teens who went to Lake Wateree on Monday afternoon, Coroner David West said in a news release.
The 18-year-old Lugoff-Elgin High School student had a problem and went under the water at the Buck Hill Landing, according to the release. That is on the Lugoff side of the lake in Ridgeway, about 12 miles north of Camden.
His friends found Estrada, and a person who was fishing in the area performed CPR on the teen until EMS arrived and took him to KersawHealth, West said.
The teenager was later flown to Prisma Health Richland, where he died early Tuesday morning from complications caused by the drowning, according to the release.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday, West said.
