22-year-old woman identified as person killed in Richland County crash, coroner says

One person is dead after a Saturday morning wreck on Interstate 77 near Blythewood.

The collision occurred at about 7 a.m. near mile marker 28, a mile north of Blythewood Road, according to Lance Cpl. Matt Southern of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

A semi-truck without a trailer was parked in the right-side emergency lane on northbound I-77.

A driver of a Toyota Corolla swerved off the left side of the interstate while heading north, Southern said. The driver over-corrected and swerved off the right side of the interstate. The driver struck the parked semi-truck.

The Toyota driver was trapped in the vehicle and died. The driver was a wearing a seat belt, Southern said. The semi-truck driver was not injured.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts identified the Toyota driver as Cassandra Harrington. An autopsy showed the 22-year-old Fort Mill woman’s cause of death was blunt force trauma, Watts said.

The collision temporarily blocked part of the interstate.

Both the coroner’s office and Highway Patrol are investigating the collision.
