West Columbia riverwalk reopens after coronavirus closure
The West Columbia Riverwalk Park and Amphitheater reopens today, Friday.
The park’s reopening coincides with the reopening of South Carolina state parks Friday, as various parts of the state take steps toward easing strict social distancing and isolation amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The riverwalk pathways along the Congaree River will be open, but the park’s bathroom facilities will remain closed, according to a news release from West Columbia officials.
“West Columbia will continuously monitor visitor usage and adjust as needed to ensure compliance with the guidance provided by SCDHEC and the CDC,” the release said.
The connecting Cayce section of the riverwalk and the Timmerman Trail have been open.
The riverwalk is a popular recreational destination for walkers, runners and bikers.
Across the river in Columbia, all public parks — including Riverfront Park along the Columbia Canal — technically have been closed for weeks to promote social distancing and attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19. However, trails at the canal park have remained accessible to users. Some local residents have noted on social media recently that the trails have been occasionally busy.
Social distancing guidelines from federal and state health officials recommend people keep at least 6 feet of distance from one another, including outdoors, to help prevent the spread of the highly infectious virus.
