12-year-old girl, 1 other dead in Sumter County car wreck

A 12-year-old girl and a 74-year-old woman died in a car wreck in Sumter County on Saturday, according to a news release from Coroner Robert Baker.

Annie Henderson, 74, of E. Charlotte Ave, and Roxanne Coulter, 12, of Ruger Drive, were involved in the fatal two-car collision around 1:50 p.m. on May 2, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said. Both were pronounced death at Prisma Health Tuomey hospital, Baker said in the news release.

The collision occurred in the Shiloh community of Sumter, on Highway 53 and Fullard Road, a “narrow, paved road,” according to Master Trooper Brian Lee. While on Highway 53, a 2002 Honda Accord and a 2004 Buick Regal collided.

The driver of the Buick was wearing a seatbelt, but no other occupants of either vehicle were, according to Lee. All who were involved in the crash were taken to a local hospital.

The Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston will perform an autopsy on Monday morning, the Sumter County coroner said. South Carolina Highway Patrol, Sumter County Coroner’s Office and a statewide, multidisciplinary team are investigating the wreck.
