Midlands native, local high school grad advances to semifinal of ‘The Voice’ tonight

A Richland County native and Columbia high school graduate has advanced to the penultimate round of one of America’s most popular talent shows.

Camm Wess, a 2015 Dreher High School graduate, will perform in the semifinals of “The Voice” tonight, May 11, on NBC.

After fan voting, the contestants moving onto next week’s finale will be revealed Tuesday night.

Wess is a member of the show’s “Team Legend,” backed by pop star John Legend.

Like Legend, Wess plays the piano, and he got his start signing in the choir, according to NBC. He was a member of the choir at Winthrop University. He is a native of Hopkins, now living in Blythewood, just outside of Columbia.

Wess has been so dedicated to his music career that he has put college on hold while he chases that dream, NBC reported.

This week, contestants will perform songs dedicated to their biggest fans.

“The Voice” airs at 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday on NBC.
