Columbia ties weather record after extra-rainy month

Columbia tied a record Monday for the most consecutive days of rain in May.

Rain has fallen on eight consecutive days at Columbia Metropolitan Airport, according to the National Weather Service.

The last time the Columbia area saw so many back-to-back days of rain in May was 1953, according to the NWS.

The area is still five days shy of the all-time record for most consecutive days of rain: 13, set in September 1924.

It appears there is a possibility Columbia could match that record, as there is a chance of rain predicted each day for at least the rest of the week.

In addition to an unusually long rainy-day streak, Columbia has recorded more inches of rain this month than in a normal May. About 5.6 inches of rain had fallen as of 5 p.m. Monday, according to the NWS. That’s more than 3.2 inches above the normal total for this time of month.
