Traffic delays in Irmo on I-26 after illegal load hits overpass

South Carolina Department of Transportation

Drivers heading westbound on Interstate 26 hit a snarl of traffic in Irmo on Thursday evening, as an oversized, illegal load struck an overpass on the highway.

The Koon Road Bridge, near mile marker 99, was closed as South Carolina Department of Transportation workers inspected it. On I-26, the right lane was closed, causing delays for a 4-mile stretch, from around mile markers 99 to 103.

SCDOT announced the closures at 4:33 p.m., just before rush hour traffic, and they lasted several hours.

Drivers in the area were advised to use caution and follow the posted detour route.

Traffic deaths and accidents declined over the past few months across the state as many people stayed home because of the cornavirus pandemic. Gov. Henry McMaster has said overall traffic declined as well, but that it has started to pick back up as the state begins to reopen.
