Some Columbia parks and community centers staying closed because of coronavirus spike

People won’t be able to use some of Columbia’s parks and community centers as soon as they were supposed to because of an increase in cases of the coronavirus.

The city announced that certain parks and community centers won’t reopen on June 22 as planned. The parks and centers were supposed to be open as part of phase 4 of Columbia’s reopening plan. A new date for reopening the facilities hasn’t been determined.

In the last two weeks, South Carolina and Richland County have had a spike in COVID-19 with record-breaking days for the number of new cases. The jump in cases caused city leaders to reconsider the time frame for opening parks, according to a statement from the city.

The Columbia Art Center, James Clyburn Golf Center, Columbia Tennis Center, Greenview Tennis Center and the Charles R. Drew Wellness Center had their openings indefinitely delayed.

  • Lorick Park at 1600 Lorick Avenue
  • Greenview Park at 6700 David Street

  • Woodland Park at 6500 Olde Knight Parkway
