Crews find body of missing swimmer in Congaree River
The body of a teenage swimmer has been found in the Congaree River, the Cayce Department of Public Safety announced Wednesday night.
Witnesses told investigators that the swimmer, a 17-year-old male, stood on rocks and jumped off about halfway between the Cayce Boat Landing and the Blossom Street Bridge. He went underwater and did not resurface. Investigators say he drowned.
The incident was reported at 5:47 p.m., Sgt. 1st Class Evan Antley told The State, and crews began searching at 5:59 p.m. from the Interstate 77 bridge up. The Richland County Sheriff Department’s dive team, along with the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, the Columbia Fire Department and the Cayce Public Safety Department assisted with the search.
The identity of the swimmer is not yet public. The Cayce Department of Public Safety has taken over the investigation.
