Three families in Columbia lose homes in apartment fire, officials say
Three South Carolina families were forced from their homes following a fire at an apartment complex, the Columbia Fire Department said Sunday.
Saturday’s blaze impacted three units at an apartment complex on Windsor Lake Boulevard, fire department spokesman Mike DeSumma told The State.
Ten people were displaced by the damage, and are getting assistance from volunteers with the American Red Cross. That help includes financial assistance for food, clothing, lodging, other essentials and comfort kits containing personal hygiene items, according to the Red Cross.
The fire started at about 1 p.m. in the kitchen of one of the apartments, DeSumma said. Only one of the three units was damaged by flames and smoke, and the other apartments suffered water damage, according to DeSumma.
No injuries were reported in the fire, DeSumma said.
No further investigation is expected after it was determined cooking was the source of the fire, according to DeSumma.
Information on the cost of damage caused by the fire was not available.
