Death of Midlands grandfather killed in logging accident is under investigation
A Midlands man who died after being injured at a logging site will be laid to rest on Monday.
Funeral arrangements have been set for Billy Waites, the 71-year-old Pomaria resident who was killed Thursday, Fairfield County Coroner Chris Hill said in a news release.
Waites was injured while on a job at a logging site on Newberry Road in Fairfield County, according to the release.
He was taken to a Prisma Health hospital in Richland County, where he later died, Hill said.
No other injuries were reported.
Waites worked for Charles Doolittle Logging, according to his obituary.
The coroner’s office called Waites’ death an accident, saying he suffered blunt force trauma.
Information on the nature of the accident was not available because the coroner’s office continues to actively investigate the death, Assistant Coroner Donna Clowney told The State..
Both OSHA and the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation have been notified about Waites’ death, Clowney said.
A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. at New Hope United Methodist Church in Pomaria, followed by burial in the church cemetery, according to his obituary.
Waites is survived by his wife, three children and six grandkids, the obituary said.
