Here’s when SC State House Christmas tree will light up this year

South Carolina’s State House Christmas tree is getting an early start on the holiday season this year.

The 35-foot tall fir at Gervais and Main will be lit this Sunday during the annual Governor’s Carolighting ceremony in front of the State House.

As usual, Gov. Henry McMaster will preside over the tree lighting, which will be accompanied by holiday music and festivities during a 6 p.m. broadcast on SCETV.

The Rev. Tony Foster of Restoration Worship Center in Greenwood will emcee the event.

This is the 55th annual Carolighting, which traditionally inaugurates the holiday season in the capital city. It is sponsored by Experience Columbia SC, the Columbia Garden Club and the Garden Club of South Carolina

This year’s ceremony will come a week before the lighting of the State House Hanukkah Menorah on Nov. 29. Emory University historian Deborah Lipstadt will be the keynote speaker for that event.

But Sunday’s tree ceremony won’t be the first holiday-themed event in Columbia. Sunday’s Carolighting comes three days after the Vista Lights tree lighting by the Congaree Vista Guild at the corner of Gervais and Lincoln streets.
