Santa and shots: Richland councilwoman hosting event featuring Christmas, vaccines

Have you ever wanted to get a COVID-19 vaccine and meet Kris Kringle? Well, you’ve got your chance.

Richland County Councilwoman Gretchen Barron is hosting a vaccine drive and holiday festival from 3 to 6 p.m. Dec. 5 at Killian Park at 1424 Marthan Road in Blythewood, per a release from the county.

Richland County will be providing $100 gift cards to residents who get their first dose of the vaccine at the event. Personnel from the Medical University of South Carolina will be on hand to administer vaccines to those ages 5 and up. First, second and booster shots will be available.

There will also be a host of Christmas activities at the event, including stations for making stockings and ornaments. Children also will have the chance to meet and take photos with Santa Claus. Residents can participate in the Christmas activities without getting a COVID shot.

Registration is not required for the event, but residents are encouraged to sign up ahead of time for planning purposes at www.eventbrite.com/e/211367835887.

The state Department of Environmental Control continues to report hundreds of new COVID-19 cases each day in the Palmetto State. On Tuesday, the agency reported 430 new cases and seven new deaths. The percent of tests that came back positive was 4.6%.
