A man has been arrested in connection with a Kershaw County wreck that killed a Sumter man.

According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, James Daniel Whitehead, 35, has been charged with reckless homicide, unlawful carrying of a weapon and providing false information to police.

James Montgomery Jr., of Sumter, died in the Monday crash, according to Kershaw County Coroner David West.

The crash happened at about 12:45 p.m., near mile marker 93 on Interstate 20, Master Patrolman David Jones said. That’s close to Exit 92, which is the junction with U.S. 601 in Lugoff.

Montgomery was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck east on I-20 when he was hit from behind by a 2010 Toyota Corolla, according to Jones. The Chevy ran off the right side of the road and hit several trees, Jones said.

On Wednesday, Jones identified Whitehead as the driver of the Toyota.

Through Wednesday morning, 985 people had died on South Carolina roads in 2021, state Department of Public Safety data shows.
