Large pig on the loose causes damage and is considered dangerous, police say
Police say its no joke that officers are searching for a runaway pig that has damaged property in a Midlands neighborhood and could be dangerous.
The pig is described as “large, pink and elusive,” the Sumter Police Department said Monday.
Calls complaining about the pig started coming into police over the weekend.
The pig has been “wreaking havoc” in the Freedom Boulevard area, according to police. That’s about 3 miles from Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital and also about 3 miles from the Piggly Wiggly grocery store on Broad Street in downtown Sumter.
Police shared a photo of a yard that had been torn up, and believe the damage was caused by the pig.
“This is not a laughing matter for these residents whose property was damaged by this animal,” police said. “Its size alone is of concern and we ask that you not try to approach it.”
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources is assisting police in the search for the pig.
Anyone who has seen the pig, or has information about its owner, is asked to immediately call police at 803-436-2700.
