Columbia’s Mayor-elect, Daniel Rickenmann, is in Washington, D.C., Tuesday meeting with Cabinet officials about the American Rescue Plan Act and President Biden’s infrastructure package.

A spokesperson for Rickenmann, Walt Whetsell, confirmed Rickenmann was in D.C., but said he was unavailable for an interview as Rickenmann was in meetings Tuesday morning.

Those meetings include face time with several department secretaries, including Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, as well as meetings with presidential advisors on climate, infrastructure and the American Rescue Plan, according to an email agenda for the day obtained by The State.

The agenda does not provide more specific details on those conversations, beyond who was expected to be present.

Rickenmann, currently a city council member, was joined in D.C. Tuesday by mayors and mayors-elect of Atlanta, Boston, New York City, Seattle, Arlington, Texas, Chattanooga, Tenn., Cleveland and Cincinnati, Ohio, and St. Petersburg, Fla, according to the agenda.

Rickenmann, who last month won a tight race against fellow city council member Tameika Isaac Devine, will step into his new role as mayor in early January. He will vacate his District 4 seat. Joe Taylor, a local developer and former state commerce secretary, will take over the District 4 seat after running unopposed in the Nov. 2 election.
