Plane crashes in Lake Murray
Lexington County emergency responders are responding to a plane that went down near Lake Murray Thursday afternoon.
A sheriff’s department spokesperson said the plane went down in the lake around 1:45 p.m. near Taylors Cove Road, just north of U.S. 378 in the Gilbert area.
Two people were inside the plane at the time it crashed, but were able to safely exit the plane once it hit the water and were not injured, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department confirmed.
It was not immediately clear where the small plane was flying from or to.
The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, Fire Service and EMS responded to the scene.
Caleb Krick said he saw the small white plane descending into the water from his home on Taylors Cove Road. An orange parachute opened on the plane as it landed on the lake almost directly in front of Krick’s house, then floated about half a mile to a mile away, he estimated.
“We’ve never seen anything like it,” Krick said. “It was a scary sight for sure.”
He said he searched the water for anyone who might have been ejected from the plane, but later learned from a neighbor that the two occupants had gotten out and made it to the neighbor’s home for a warm, dry change of clothes.
Boats on the lake also came over to investigate the crash before a swarm of emergency vehicles arrived on the scene, Krick said.
