FBI set to have major presence in Lexington, with new SC headquarters under construction
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is set to have a major presence in Lexington.
The FBI is constructing a new field office headquarters on a 10-acre property in northeast Lexington, just off Sunset Boulevard. The facility is set to be completed in 2023.
Once completed, the Lexington property will replace the FBI’s field office headquarters in the Columbia area, which are split across three separate buildings. The largest of those buildings is at 151 Westpark Blvd., and the FBI has leased it for 34 years. FBI agents and staff from those Columbia buildings will be consolidated into the facility in Lexington. Eight satellite FBI offices across South Carolina will remain in operation.
When the Lexington campus is completed, the FBI will have a 20-year lease on it.
“What a compliment to have the premier law enforcement agency in the nation choose the Town of Lexington as their state headquarters,” Lexington Mayor Steve MacDougall said in a statement. “After the opening of this facility, this will put every major law enforcement agency: city, county, state and now federal in our town on a daily basis.
“This speaks volumes to the safety of our community.”
The head of the FBI Columbia field office said in a statement that an updated facility will be welcomed.
“We are very excited about our new facility in Lexington,” FBI Columbia Special Agent in Charge Susan Ferensic said. “We are looking forward to the expanded space and the technological advances that will be available.”
