How can SC solve its affordable housing crisis? We want to hear from you

Everyone deserves a stable place to live, yet so many people across the world struggle to afford safe and decent housing. South Carolina is no exception.

On March 3 at 1:30 p.m., The State and Central Carolina Community Foundation will co-sponsor an online forum to discuss affordable housing in the state. Before then, we want to hear from you.

Affordable housing is a major concern for the Palmetto State. A 2021 report from SC Housing found that over the last decade, the median household income has not increased enough to keep pace with the rising cost of housing. Almost a quarter of renters in the state spend more than half their earnings on housing.

In 2016, researchers from Princeton determined that South Carolina had the worst eviction rate of any state.

Because this issue hits close to home for so many South Carolinians, we are asking readers who have been personally impacted by the housing crisis to share their stories with us.

Have you struggled to pay for housing? Have you faced eviction, foreclosure, or been forced to endure unsafe living conditions as a result? Do you have a vision for how to bring about change locally? We want to hear from you.

Submit your questions or your experience in our form below. And stay tuned for our forum on March 3, which will be streamed on www.thestate.com, The State’s Facebook page and our YouTube channel.
