Hungry for something new?

Trying out new restaurants can often be a fun, exciting experience. However, Columbia has a wealth of restaurants with new ones opening all the time, so it’s understandable if you sometimes find it hard to keep track of them all.

Below are five restaurants that have opened in the Columbia area in the last five months. Perhaps one of them pique your interest.

Falafel King

The Falafel King opened in February at 2020 Gervais St. in Columbia’s Five Points shopping district.

The restaurant offers a diverse menu that includes falafel wraps, gyros, chicken shawarma wraps, curry bowls, Damascus hummus, a host of Al-Amir bowls and a number of pizzas, from traditional pepperoni lovers pies to a Turkish fatayer offering.

Jack Brown’s Beer & Burger Joint

Jack Brown’s opened Feb. 21 at 711 Harden Street in the former Cover 3 building. The chain restaurant was founded in 2009 in Harrisonburg, Va. by childhood friends Aaron Ludwig and Mike Sabin. The 2,400 square-foot Harden Street spot is the chain’s first South Carolina location. Jack Brown’s has 15 locations throughout the Southeast.

Jack Brown’s serves Wagyu beef, also known as American-style Kobe beef, from Snake River Farms in Boise, Idaho. The beef comes from the cross-breeding of Japanese Wagyu cattle with continental breeds to produce a rich, buttery texture when cooked.

Cucinella’s Pizzeria and Italian

Cucinella’s Pizzeria and Italian Ice opened at 2250 Sunset Blvd. suite M in West Columbia in February.

The pizzeria’s menu boasts a host of pizzas on New York-style thin crusts or gluten-free cauliflower crusts. Customers can customize their pies with traditional toppings or explore some of the shop’s specialty pizzas.

The list of specialty pies includes, among others, the Flamethrower (marinara, mozzarella, bacon, hot cherry peppers, fresh jalapeno, hot honey and red pepper) and the Uncle Paulie (marinara, mozzarella, sliced meatballs, roasted red peppers, fresh basil and hot honey).

The restaurant also offers stromboli, calzones, salads, garlic knots and more.

And for those craving something sweet, Cucinella’s has house-made, hand-scooped Italian ice and gelato. Italian ice flavors include lemon, cherry, strawberry, mango, pineapple, blueberry, blackberry, peanut butter and cookies-and-cream.

Boku Kitchen and Saloon

Boku Kitchen and Saloon opened earlier this year at 916 Gervais St. in the Vista downtown district.

The Pan-Asian restaurant’s menu features a robust selection of noodles, as well as entrees such as honey chicken and kimchi fried rice. It also has a number of salads and soups and several small plate dishes, including calamari, Hong Kong ribs, crab Rangoon and edamame, among other offerings. The spot also will feature a full bar.

Peebles Barbecue and Wings

Peebles opened it’s second location at 902-B Gervais St. in the Vista entertainment district in February. Peebles has long had a restaurant on Rosewood Drive.

The restaurant offers a host of menu items, including wings in numerous flavors, ribs, barbecue sandwiches, catfish po’ boys, fried shrimp, cheesesteaks and more. It also offers boiled peanuts, a South Carolina favorite, on its appetizers menu.
