West Columbia will host the third annual Kinetic Derby on April 23.

Soapbox derby and food truck fans will get the chance to unite in West Columbia next weekend.

West Columbia is set to host the third annual Kinetic Derby Day on April 23. Thousands are expected to attend the event, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Meeting Street and State Street. The idea behind the event is to spur creative thinking, competition and family fun as teams come together to build unusual vehicles and art installations, a West Columbia press release states.

The event begins with soapbox cars taking over the massive hill on Meeting Street to race in adult and children divisions. After the traditional side-by-side soapbox race ends at noon, an obstacle course will be set up on Meeting Street for more intense soapbox racing.

Awards will be given for the best art car, the fastest car and the best wipeout.

At the bottom of the hill will be a food truck rally and West Columbia’s Interactive Art Park hosting an artisan fairway.

A Ferris wheel will be placed at the corner of Meeting Street and State Street to offer views of the city skylines.

Also on State Street, you’ll find a mini-STEAM festival with interactive science fun, exhibition soapbox racing, face painting and a kid’s zone.

The city currently needs more volunteers to help with the event. To sign up, go to kineticderbyday.com or https://signup.com/client/invitation2/secure/367018989964440020/false#/invitation.
