Running 4 Heroes nonprofit honors fallen Cayce police officer with tribute run
A nonprofit started by an 11-year-old boy to honor first responders ran a mile in tribute of a Cayce police officer who was shot and killed on Sunday.
Zechariah Cartledge, founder of the Florida-based Running 4 Heroes nonprofit, carried a flag on Sunday in honor of Officer Roy Andrew “Drew” Barr. The 28-year-old officer was killed after responding to a 911 call about a domestic disturbance, according to Cayce Police Department officials.
According to the Running 4 Heroes website, Cartledge runs to raise money for the family of fallen law enforcement officers and injured first responders. Each month, the nonprofit, founded in 2019, donates a minimum of $10,000 to a first responder injured in the line of duty, the website states. In 2020, the nonprofit awarded more than $85,000 in grants.
Meanwhile, every flag Cartledge runs with in honor of a fallen officer is later mailed to that person’s family.
Also, the nonprofit works to present a different K9 officer each month with a ballistic vest and/or safety equipment.
