Bear sighted roaming South Carolina city, police warn. Here’s what to know
A South Carolina city is on the lookout for a black bear recently seen in the area.
The Laurens Police Department alerted residents on Facebook Sunday that it was aware of a black bear moving through the city of Laurens and warned people to stay away from it.
The department said that the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources had been made aware of the bear and had advised that the best course of action currently is to leave the animal alone so that it hopefully would soon return to the wild.
“The only way that DNR will intervene is in the event that the bear becomes hostile at which time they will move in to attempt to subdue and relocate the animal,” the department statement reads.
The department asks residents that they not enter any areas or neighborhoods where they’ve heard the bear is visiting to get a photograph, as this could provoke or scare it.
However, if anyone sees the bear getting too close to their residence or shows signs of hostility, they’re urged to call 911 immediately, the department says.
