Cinco de Mayo 2022: 6 Columbia-area events to celebrate the holiday

Sure, you could just swing by your local bar for a few tequila shots and margaritas to celebrate Cinco de Mayo on Thursday, but why not try a special event this year?

Cinco de Mayo or May 5, is a Mexican holiday that celebrates the country’s victory over France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862 during the Franco-Mexican war. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo is mainly celebrated with drinking, parties and events that celebrate Mexican culture.

Below are six Columbia-area events to spice up your Cinco de Mayo celebrations this year.

Cinco de Mayo Harvest Dinner

When: Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Where: City Roots Farm at 1005 Airport Blvd., Columbia

Join City Roots Farm or a harvest feast. Be prepared for a family-style, four-course farm to table dinner by Chef/Owner Kristian Niemi of Bourbon, Black Rooster, F2T Productions and Honey River Catering and friends, featuring seasonal ingredients from local farmers and artisans. Also. enjoy a welcome cocktail and wine pairings while you’re there.

City Roots Farm recommend talking with the people you would like to sit with and picking a table. Then, have your dinner-mates purchase a ticket for the same table. Visitors are asked not to purchase seats at other people’s tables.

Cinco de Mayo Karaoke Party

When: 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Where: WE’s Bar at 735 Meeting St, West Columbia

Join CarraRock Entertainment to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with some fabulous Karaoke at their newest location, WE’s Bar. Self-proclaimed as West Columbia’s first pride bar, the establishment opened in March at the former Comedy Closet.

Cinco de Mayo at Uncle Festers

When: 8 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Where: Uncle Festers Sports Bar at 522 Devine Street, Columbia

Come to Uncle Festers on Cinco de Mayo for drinks and live music. The bar will feature margaritas, Mexican beer, and local Music from Carne Con Papas w/ Special Guest Britt & Gould. Advanced tickets are available for $8 or you can buy them for $10 at the door.

Cinco de Mayo at the Chophouse

When: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Where: Chophouse at 301 Columbia Ave., Chaplin

The Chophouse event will feature $5 house margaritas, $8 spiced pear margaritas, $13 chicken mole tacos served with pico de gallo and tortilla chips. Call 803-723-2351 to reserve a table.

The Low Country Boys at Bunky’s Tavern

When: Friday at 8 p.m.

Where: Bunky’s Tavern at 923 Old State Road, Gaston

Bunky’s Tavern plans to keep the Cinco de Mayo partying going on Friday with live music and plenty of food. There will be no cover charge for the event, which will feature BBQ plates, drink specials and bike parking.

Ride the mechanical bull at Legacy Caribbean Bar

When: Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Where: Legacy Caribbean Bar and Grill at 215 Oneil Court, Columbia

Legacy is offering free mechanical bull rides all night long to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. Ride the bull in the middle of the dance floor and see how long you can last for a chance to win cash and prizes. Legacy’s Cinco de Mayo event will also feature various tequila brands and other drinks, private booths and Caribbean cuisine such as jerk chicken, curry chicken, curry shrimp and more.
