Summer is not quite here yet, but the dog days have arrived.

Hot dogs have long been a mainstay on the American table, particularly in the warmer months, when the smell of the grill draws us out into the backyard in the fading light of early evening. They are a staple of church cookouts and baseball games, and everyone has their own idea about which condiments are needed to dress them out properly.

The hot dog also is a recurring character on the menus of restaurants across Columbia and the Midlands. From tucked away gas stations to fast food drive-thrus to even some of the most high-end tables in town, hot dogs continue to nourish and delight just about everyone. From construction workers on a lunch break to families on weekend outings to college kids looking for a cheap hangover cure, the humble hot dog is always a welcome option.

Now we want readers to tell us which Midlands hot dog spot they think is the best. Welcome to The State’s 2022 Hot Dog Bracket.

We are starting with 16 restaurants, identified by members of The State’s staff. As ever, this is not a scientific or all-encompassing poll, and we tried to put an emphasis on mostly locally owned spots and a few small chains.

In the first round, we are asking readers to vote for their eight favorite places out of the initial group of 16. The field will be cut in half for the second round.

You have until 11:59 p.m. Friday, May 6 to cast your votes in the first round, the Savory 16. Then look for Round 2, the Flavorful 8, on Monday, May 9.

So cast your votes for your favorites. We hope you’ll relish the opportunity.
