SC average gas price nears $4 a gallon again. Find the cheapest Columbia-area fuel here
The average gas price in South Carolina has risen to nearly $4 a gallon this week and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.
According to AAA South Carolina, the state’s average price for a gallon of regular gasoline was $3.95 Friday morning. The price was up from $3.81 a week ago and $2.65 a year ago.
The average price was slightly higher in Columbia at $3.96 a gallon, up from $3.81 a week earlier and $2.64 a year ago.
Gas prices hit $4 a gallon in the state in March and nearly reached record highs before finally dropping a couple of weeks later.
The national average gas price has remained above $4 a gallon since March and was at $4.27 a gallon Friday morning.
Tiffany Wright, spokeswoman for AAA South Carolina, said the current high cost of crude oil has again pushed up gasoline prices in the state. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has exacerbated the problem.
“It’ll be difficult for the price of crude oil to fall as long as supply remains tight,” Wright said. “Global supply concerns are keeping upward pressure on oil prices and many countries are still looking to limit the import of Russian oil. Since oil prices account for about 60% of what drivers pay at gas stations, volatility at the pump is likely to continue through the summer travel season.”But while the average gas price is knocking on the door of $4 a gallon in the area, there are still service stations that are selling cheaper fuel. Here’s where to buy the cheapest regular gas in the Columbia area today, according to GasBuddy.com.
