No more movies or TV shows filmed in SC? If Hollywood writers had their way, yes. Here’s why
Hollywood should avoid making any movies or television shows in South Carolina because of its abortion laws, the union for American writers says.
The Writers Guild of America West, the union that represents writers in film, television, radio and internet programming, recently urged their employers against filming in any states that would ban or limit abortion.
“… We want to reaffirm our Guild’s commitment to fighting on our members’ behalf against inequality and discrimination,” The Guild wrote on its official Twitter account. “Women’s rights are human rights, and any laws that ban or limit a woman’s right to choose are dangerous and set a precedent for further erosion of our collective civil rights.”
The request came days after a leaked draft opinion, first reported on by Politico, showed that the U.S. Supreme Court planned to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 decision that legalized abortion in the United States.
South Carolina law currently permits abortions up to the first 20 weeks of pregnancy with a number of provisions. The state does not have a trigger law that would ban abortions if Roe V. Wade is overturned, but a debate in the Legislature would likely take place over enacting stricter anti-abortion laws.
The Supreme Court opinion was drafted in February 2022 an it’s likely that a final ruling will be made public within the next two months, Politico reported.
