Columbia animal shelter overloaded with dogs. Here’s how you can help save a life
Columbia Animal Services’ shelter is filled to capacity with dogs and the public has been urged to help by adopting a new four-legged friend.
There are currently 192 dogs at Columbia Animal Services’ shelter, a Thursday press release states. However, there are only 148 dedicated dog kennels.
Of those 192 dogs, 113 are currently up for adoption, with more to soon become available, the press release states.
According to its website, Columbia Animal Services does euthanize animals. The site notes, however, that animal services is working toward ending euthanasia of adoptable pets through “an aggressive spay/neuter program.”
Animal services lets residents spend time with their future furry friends before adoption. If you are interested in adopting a dog, you can take it outside to the shelter’s renovated canine meet and greet areas. You can offer treats, sit with the dog and play with toys to make sure it’s the one you want to commit to for the rest of its life.
Bring the following items to adopt:
- A valid picture ID with your current address
- Proof of age (You must be 18 or older to adopt from Columbia Animal Services.)
- Proper form of payment. Animal services accepts cash, credit/debit card or checks accompanied with a current driver’s license. All adoptions cost $35 each.
- All dogs must go home on a leash. Please bring a leash and collar or plan to purchase them at the time of adoption.
See Spay/Neuter Your Pet to learn more about the benefits and details. You can learn more at www.animalmission.org.
