South Carolina gas prices on path to hit shocking $5 a gallon soon. Here are the details

South Carolina regular gasoline prices are on track to hit a record $5 a gallon average soon, possibly even this month, one industry expert says.

Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said on Twitter that $5 a gallon averages could pop up across the nation soon.

“Current estimated target date for national average to hit $5/gal: June 17,” De Haan said.

According to AAA South Carolina, regular gasoline cost $4.46 a gallon on average in the state on Monday, a new record following a $0.20 increase over last week. The national average Monday morning was $4.86 a gallon.

Meanwhile, Columbia showed a $4.45 a gallon average Monday morning, a new record for the city.

If both South Carolina and Columbia gas prices increase at the rate they did last week, they’ll easily hit $5 a gallon before the June 17 estimate.

“After a blistering week of gas prices jumping in nearly every town, city, state and area possible, more bad news is on the horizon. It now appears not if, but when, we’ll hit that psychologically critical $5 national average,” De Haan said in a Monday press release. “Gasoline inventories continue to decline even with demand softening due to high prices, a culmination of less refining capacity than we had prior to Covid and strong consumption, a situation that doesn’t look to improve drastically anytime soon.”

Here’s where you could find the cheapest regular gas in Columbia on Monday, according to GasBuddy.

  • Sam’s Club at 350 Harbison Blvd — $4.26

  • Murphy Express at 3000 Two Notch Road — $4.28

  • Murphy Express at 7302 Broad River Road — $4.28

  • Murphy Express at 201 Bush River Road — $4.29

  • Circle K at 6122 Garners Ferry Road — $4.29

  • Murphy USA at 1330 Bush River Road — $4.29
