A longtime Fox Carolina anchor is leaving the Upstate to move to Atlanta.

Cody Alcorn, known for a big social media presence especially involving breaking news, announced he will leave the Greenville station in a few weeks. He said in an interview Monday night he was leaving for personal reasons and did not have a job lined up. He said his agent is working on finding him something in news.

“For the first time, I’m putting myself first,” Alcorn said.

He said his commitment to his job is all-consuming, anchoring five newscasts and taking tips for breaking news even over weekends.

He said the decision to leave was months in the making. He has been driving to Atlanta every weekend since October and even while there, there when he hears from sources, he posts to social media, follows up and gives information to other Fox News reporters.

“I’ve worked non-stop,” he said.

Still, it was a difficult decision.

“I grew up here not only as a journalist, but as a person, too,” he said.

In a video posted to the Fox Carolina website, Alcorn talked about the many stories he covered, from investigations to natural disasters, then said in a shaking voice, “It has been my pleasure to serve you.”

Alcorn has been with Fox Carolina for 16 years and has been co-anchor on news hours at 4 p.m., 5 p.m., 6 p.m., 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. Monday through Friday since 2013.

He started as a weekend reporter in July 2006 when he was 23, having moved from Jackson, Tennessee, where he was co-anchor of the morning news at WBBJ-TV, an ABC and CBS affiliate. He attended the University of Tennessee at Martin, his biography on the Fox Carolina website says. He is originally from Missouri.

A story on the Fox Carolina website said Alcorn “is proudest of the way viewers connected with him on social media, constantly feeding him and the newsroom stories happening in their neighborhoods.”

Fox Carolina News Director Marybeth Jacoby was quoted in the story, saying, “Cody’s contributions to the Fox Carolina team go beyond what he has done on camera. He has been a leader behind the scenes day in and day out. “

Alcorn, 39, said in the interview not everyone gets to leave their job on a high note.

“You just come to a point when you have a feeling it’s time to go” he said.
