SC crews searching Lake Murray dam area for missing boater, DNR says

A person went missing while on the water near the Lake Murray dam Friday, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.

A call came into the natural resources department about noon concerning the missing person. The person went missing from a boat, a department spokesperson said.

“The incident does involve a boat, which is why SCDNR is the investigating agency,” spokesperson Stephen Fastenau said.

Divers with the department’s Aquatic Investigations and Recovery team and a plane crew were sent to search the lake.

“At this point, those are the only details I‘m able to share,” Fastenau said.

Typically when divers are sent to a water scene that means a drowning has occurred. The department did not confirm if they were looking for a drowning victim.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said her office had “not yet” been called to Lake Murray Friday.
