Summer has arrived in South Carolina and, as is custom, folks are looking for ways to cool off.

For many, that means a trip to their favorite ice cream spot. This is peak season for those who offer various flavorful frozen confections, one scoop at a time.

The Columbia and Lexington areas have their share of ice cream joints, and the options are bountiful. Whether you are looking for a cup or a cone, a shake or a sundae, a locally owned joint or a big chain, the Midlands has places that fit the bill.

We are asking readers to vote for their favorite local ice cream spot in The State’s 2022 Ice Cream Poll, which includes 21 places chosen by members of The State’s staff. Now, to be sure, this is not a scientific poll, nor is it a comprehensive list. We tried to stick to places that serve ice cream, though a few spots that serve frozen yogurt or frozen custard made the list. (Sorry, shaved ice fans. Maybe next time.)

You have until 11:59 p.m. on June 30 to cast your votes. Choose wisely, and don’t forget to ask for extra sprinkles.
