Coroner identifies homicide victim found dead in downtown Columbia

A man authorities say was killed in a homicide over the weekend has been identified.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office said that Orenthal Chestnut, 45, was discovered unresponsive on the 1400 block of Gregg Street around 9:30 a.m. Sunday. Columbia police have been investigating his death since a resident called 911 Sunday, when EMS arrived on scene and confirmed Chestnut was dead.

The Columbia Police Department said Thursday that Chestnut’s death had been ruled a homicide following an autopsy.

Officers collected items from the scene for processing. The Richland County Coroner’s Office is investigating, as well.

Police are asking anyone with information about the death to call Crimestoppers at 888-CRIME-SC or visit www.CrimeSC.com and click the “submit a tip” tab.
