Motorcycle driver killed in Richland County crash with pickup truck

The driver of a motorcycle died Sunday evening after a two-vehicle crash in Richland County.

South Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper Tyler Tidwell said the collision happened at 6:50 p.m. Sunday on U.S. 76 near Shadowood Drive. That’s about 17 miles northwest of downtown Columbia.

According to Tidwell, a 2022 GMC Sierra truck was turning left off Shadowood Drive onto U.S. 76, heading west. A 2008 Harley-Davidson motorcycle was traveling east on U.S. 76, and the two vehicles collided.

The driver of the motorcycle was taken to Prisma Health Richland and later died. A passenger of the motorcycle also was taken to the hospital for injuries.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office had not released the name of the person killed in the crash as of early Monday morning.

There were three occupants in the GMC Sierra. They were uninjured, Tidwell said.

Nearly 500 people have died in crashes along South Carolina’s roadways in 2022, according to the state Department of Public Safety.
