Columbia firefighters battle overnight blaze at concrete plant

An early morning fire Friday damaged a building at a Columbia concrete plant.

Firefighters responded to Thomas Concrete shortly before 4:30 a.m. following reports that fire and black smoke could be seen billowing from a building on the property, Columbia fire officials said.

Crews arrived to find a storage area on the property, located in the 1700 block of Peeples Street in northern Columbia, engulfed in flames.

Firefighters knocked down a bulk of the fire and brought the scene under control within minutes, officials said. No one was injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

A spokesman for the fire department said he didn’t know how much damage the storage unit had sustained.
