Woman killed after being trapped in burning building identified by Midlands coroner
One person was killed after being trapped inside a burning building, South Carolina officials said Wednesday.
Mae Rene Cannon Jackson, a 72-year-old Saluda County resident died, according to the Saluda County Coroner’s Office.
At about 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, there were 911 calls about a residential structure fire with entrapment, the Saluda County Fire Service said.
The house fire was on John J. Rushton Road, the coroner’s office said.
When firefighters from multiple departments arrived, they confirmed a person was trapped in the building, the fire service said. Attempts to rescue Jackson were not successful, according to the fire service.
Jackson died at the scene, the coroner’s office said.
No other injuries were reported.
Coroner Keith Turner said Jackson’s death was accidental.
There was no word on where the fire started, or the cause, but it is being investigated by the fire service, coroner’s office, the Saluda County Sheriff’s Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
In addition to the fire service, other crews that responded to the burning building include the sheriff’s office, Saluda County EMS, Mayson Fire Department, Saluda Fire Department and Old Town Fire Department.
