A longtime West Columbia City Council member has resigned.

District 3 Councilwoman Casey Hallman resigned effective Aug. 1 because she is moving outside the city limits, according to a city news release. A city spokeswoman said information about a special election to fill the seat will be released in coming weeks.

Hallman has been serving on the West Columbia City Council for more than a decade, having first been elected in 2011. She was most recently reelected in 2021. The unexpired term for the District 3 seat runs through 2025.

Hallman is an assistant principal at Gray Collegiate Academy. A Cayce native and Brookland-Cayce High School alum, she previously worked as a teacher and an instructional facilitator in the Lexington 2 school district.

West Columbia has experienced steady growth, with its population increasing from about 14,000 in 2010 to about 17,500 in 2021, per census data. The city has seen a surge of activity near the Gervais Street bridge, where restaurants, bars, apartments and more have proliferated.
