Student charged after Midlands high school bomb threat

A 17-year-old Lexington High School student was charged Thursday after making a false claim about a bomb in a book bag at the school, according to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department.

The male student who was charged sent a message to another student that included a photo of a book bag and claimed there was a bomb in it, according to the department. Further details on what the message included were not provided.

Sheriff’s deputies interviewed the student and determined he did not have any explosives. The student was charged with making a bomb threat and released to his guardians.

Authorities will not release the student’s name as he is a minor. The student will appear in Lexington County Family Court “at a later date,” according to the department.

“Lexington County School District One administration notified us and we went to work finding out what happened,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said in a statement. “We confirmed the student took a picture of a random book bag on the campus and sent the message a short time later.”
