Most Columbia area residents will get a three-day, Labor Day weekend.

They just shouldn’t expect a dry one.

According to the National Weather Service, the Columbia area has several chances of rain starting Friday and lasting through Labor Day on Monday.

“It does look like we’ve got good chances of rain on Saturday and Sunday … Monday it looks like more of the same,” said Pierce Larkin, meteorologist with the NWS in Columbia.

But will the rain be enough to ruin some people’s outdoor holiday plans?

“I don’t think the rain will be enough to ruin anything,” Larkin said. “But it looks like it will be a pretty wet weekend.”

Larkin said the rain will be typical for this time of year, with scattered showers capable of producing some heavy rain — but not lasting more than 40 or 45 minutes. The greatest chances of rainfall will be in the afternoon and evenings, he added.

Meanwhile, temperatures should drop to the high 80s, slightly lower than they’ve been this week.

However, there will likely be higher levels of humidity over the weekend, Larkin said.
