Fire at northwest Columbia apartment complex displaces 11 residents

At least 11 residents were displaced from their homes Friday, but none were injured following a fire at an apartment complex in northwest Columbia, fire officials said.

The fire started just before 9:15 a.m. Friday at the Lexington Green condominiums on Bush River Road, just off of Interstate 26, the Columbia Fire Department tweeted.

Upon responding to the blaze, fire crews from Columbia and Irmo found black smoke wafting from a top-story apartment and the roof line, the department said.

Firefighters were able to access the apartment and quickly brought the fire under control.

No injuries were reported and fire damage was confined to a single apartment, but power had to be cut to half of the building, fire officials said.

The Richland County fire marshal will investigate the cause of the blaze.
