Lugoff man dead from injuries after jumping into Lake Hartwell

A Lugoff man died early this morning after being pulled from Lake Hartwell.

Odell Gaither, 21, had jumped off a floating dock near the Y-Beach at the lake, the Oconee County Sheriff’s Department reported. He was in underwater for about 10 minutes before he was recovered by bystanders at 7:20 p.m. Saturday.

Gaither died at 2:41 a.m. Sunday at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

The sheriff’s office said, Gaither, a student at USC-Upstate, could swim.

The Oconee County’s coroner’s office is investigating.
