SC man dies in lake after falling off boat during Labor Day weekend

A Lancaster man died after falling out of a boat into Lake Wateree over Labor Day weekend.

The Lancaster County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased as 32-year-old Jeremiah “Spud” Williams, of Lancaster. A forensic autopsy is scheduled for later this week, authorities said.

According to a release from the coroner’s office, Williams was reported missing in the early morning hours of Sunday, Sept. 4, on Lake Wateree near Stumpy Pond. He had been on the boat with two other people when he reportedly fell over the front of the boat.

The other two people in the boat said they jumped in to try to rescue Williams but could not, the coroner’s office said. Authorities were called and soon began looking for the man. Rescue efforts went through the day on Sept. 4 and continued into Monday, Sept. 5.

At about 3:15 p.m. Sept. 5, S.C. Department of Natural Resources divers found the man’s body.

SCDNR and the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate.
