Police investigate fatal wreck on Monticello Road in Columbia, SC

Authorities are investigating a deadly car crash on Columbia’s Monticello Road.

At about 9 p.m. Saturday, the Columbia Police Department reported on social media that it was on the scene of a two-vehicle wreck at the 7400 block of Monticello Road. That’s about two miles northwest of Interstate 20, near Columbia International University.

Police said there was one fatality in the crash, and that the driver of one of the vehicles was taken to an area hospital. The police department’s traffic safety unit was investigating the wreck.

According to a CPD spokeswoman, a 2007 Mercury Mountaineer was traveling south on Monticello. A 2021 Kia [online copy corrected] was leaving a driveway and turning left onto Monticello, northbound, when the vehicles collided. The driver of the Kia died in the collision.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office had not released the name of the deceased as of Sunday morning. Police and the coroner’s office continue to investigate, the police spokeswoman said,

South Carolina Department of Public Safety statistics show that 681 people have died on the state’s roadways in 2022.
