SC inmate dies after fight at Broad River prison in Columbia

An inmate from a state prison in Columbia has died after a fight with another prisoner.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections said in a release that inmate Jermaine Antonio Goss, 36, was “critically injured” Saturday in a fight with a cellmate at Broad River Correctional Institution in Columbia. The release said he was taken to an area hospital and later died.

Broad River Correctional Institution is located at 4460 Broad River Road in Columbia, and it is a medium-security level prison.

The corrections department’s Office of Investigations and Intelligence is investigating the incident, as are the State Law Enforcement Division and the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

An autopsy will be performed.
